Sanjit K. Mitra is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He has served IEEE in various capacities, including as the President of the IEEE Circuits & Systems Society. Dr. Mitra has been awarded honorary doctorate degrees from Tampere University of Technology, Finland, the Technical University of Bucharest, Romania, and the Technical University of Iasi, Romania. His accolades include multiple awards from IEEE societies such as the IEEE Circuits & Systems Society and the IEEE Signal Processing Society, as well as recognition from the European Association for Signal Processing. He has also received the IEEE James Mulligan, Jr. Education Medal, and the IEEE Kirchhoff Award. Dr. Mitra is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering, Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences, an Academician of the Academy of Finland, and a foreign member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences and Letters, Brazilian Academy of Engineering, Croatian Academy of Engineering, Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Academy of Engineering of Mexico, Engineering Academy of Japan Academia Europaea, European Academy of Sciences and Arts, Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, a Foreign Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India and the Indian National Academy of Engineering. He is a Life Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE), and the National Academy of Inventors.
