Workshop on Dance Traditions of India - ICASSP 2025

–  by Dr. Anupama Kylash and team

India, a land of diverse cultures and traditions, expresses its rich heritage through its vibrant dance forms, which are broadly categorized into classical and folk styles. This workshop delves into the intricate world of Indian dance, exploring its refined classical traditions and lively expressions. The classical dance forms, deeply rooted in spiritual and storytelling traditions, include Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Manipuri, Chhau and Sattriya. These dances are characterized by intricate movements, expressive hand gestures, rhythmic footwork, and emotive storytelling (abhinaya), often drawing inspiration from ancient scriptures, epics, and devotional themes. Dances of India are associated with a specific region, yet they all share a foundation, while hoary textual tradition informs them. This session, through live demonstrations and insightful explanations, aims to provide an immersive experience, highlighting the significance of dances in India along with its artistic and cultural identity.
